Participation and rules

Participation instructions

Read the rules carefully, fill in the online form and send it. You may enclose a one-minute video with the form.

All prototypes/demos and other similar physical attachments to the entry must be delivered to the Lobby Services of Joensuu Science Park Ltd (address: Länsikatu 15, 80110 Joensuu), marked “Start Me Up 2018”.

Competition period is 1 February 2018 to 31 March 2018. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 9 May 2018.

1Submitting a business idea
  1. Complete the electronic entry form.
    1. Go to https://go.startmeup.fi. 
    2. First, create an account. Enter your e-mail address, give a password, confirm the password and then click "Create account and continue".
    3. Enter your business idea details.

  2. If you want to submit your business idea to the competition immediately, click "Send" If you want to return and edit your entry later, click "Close?.

  3. Ready! You can log out from the menu in the top right corner.

 

In order to participate in the competition, you must submit your idea. Once you have submitted your idea, you can no longer edit it.

If you click "Close", remember to complete and submit the form later. See instructions for Editing your business idea and submitting several ideas.

The maximum allowed length of the video is 1 minute. You can only add one video per business idea. If you participate in Some Awards, the name and description of your business idea, as well as the participant's name may be published with the video release.

 

2Editing your business idea and submitting several ideas

If you have a number of business ideas, you can submit your second, third, etc. without separate registration.

If you want to go back and edit the details of an idea or add a new idea:

  1. Go to https://go.startmeup.fi.
     
  2. Log in by clicking "Login", entering your e-mail address and password.

  3. Select the idea you want to work on, complete the form and submit the idea by clicking "Submit".

If you want to enter several business ideas in the competition:

  1. Go to https://go.startmeup.fi.
     
  2. Log in by clicking "Login", entering your e-mail address and password.

  3. Open the menu in the top right corner.

  4. Click "Add idea".

  5. Complete another competition form and submit your idea.

3Adding a video

To add a video to the competition form:

  1. Make a one-minute video of your business idea. See the content guidelines.

    On the video, you must first state your own name and the name of your idea (compulsory details).

  2. Create an account or log into the competition form at https://go.startmeup.fi.  

  3. Add your video in the section "Video (max 1 min)".

  4. If you also want to participate in the Some Awards category, respond Yes to the question: I want to participate in the Some Awards category with my video?

  5. Complete the competition form and submit your idea by clicking Submit.

  6. Ready! You can log out from the menu in the top right corner.

Before submitting the form, you can remove your video by clicking "Remove" and replace it with another video file.

4Participating in the Some Awards category

To participate in the Some Awards category of the Start Me Up business idea competition:

  1. Make your video.

  2. Create an account or log into the competition form at https://go.startmeup.fi.  

  3. Following the instructions, add your video to the Start Me Up business idea competition form.

  4. Respond Yes to the question: I want to participate in the Some Awards category with my video?

  5. Complete the competition form and submit your idea by clicking Submit.

  6. Ready! You can sign out from the menu in the top right corner.

  7. Follow Joensuu Science Park and Start Me Up business idea competition on Facebook and encourage members of your network to vote for your video starting 4 April 2018, which is the video release date.

Rules of the competition 2018

1. OBJECTIVE

To identify and reward individuals or companies with a business idea that has the potential to drive entrepreneurship and is implementable in North Karelia.

2. PRIZES

Monetary prizes:

  • The first prize is EUR 20,000 and facilities at the Joensuu Science Park for a year
  • The World of Digitalisation prize of EUR 10,000, sponsored by Arcusys
  • Student prize: EUR 5,000
  • Business Idea Originating in Research prize: EUR 5,000
  • Brainstorm Idea prize: EUR 2,000
  • Some Awards prize: EUR 1,000
  • A prize draw: EUR 1,000

Expert service prizes:

  • Legal services worth EUR 1,500, sponsored by Attorneys at Law Surakka Oy
  • Strong patent application: EUR 4,900 sponsored by Leitzinger Oy

Support for piloting:

  • Circular economy theme: EUR 10,000
  • Pilot projects in Central Karelia: EUR 10,000
  • Pilot projects in Lieksa: EUR 10,000
  • Other pilots: EUR 8,500

Cash prizes represent taxable income for private individuals. The first prize can only be awarded to a competitor with a business ID. The first prize must be used for further development of the idea in North Karelia. A plan, approved by the organiser, on how the prize money will be used to generate business is a prerequisite for the paying out of the first prize.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday 9 May 2018.

7. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR THE BUSINESS IDEAS

The business ideas will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • Feasibility
  • Innovativeness
  • Business growth potential
  • Internationalisation potential
     

8. PUBLICITY

  • All business ideas will be handled in the strictest confidence.
  • Competitors are responsible for protecting any intellectual property rights associated with their business idea.
  • The winning business ideas will be publicly announced.
  • Should the participants wish to set any limitations on publicity, this must be indicated on the registration form.
  • Ideas entered in the Some Awards category will be made public on Wednesday 4 April 2018.
     

9. ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS

The results of the competition will be announced and prizes will be awarded to the winners in Joensuu on Wednesday 9 May 2018. For the pilots, the prize winners will be announced, in so far as they are known, by 9 May 2018.

10. PILOTING

Through the Start Me Up pilot funding, you can speed up product development, or redesign or develop entirely new products, services, production methods or business models. You can use the funding to test and verify, alongside customers, that your new solution works. The goal is to enable the idea’s development into a commercial product or service. A total of EUR 33,500 has been reserved for the piloting of ideas by entrants in the business idea competition.

  1. Decisions on the use of the funds will be made by representatives of the Joensuu Science Park Ltd’s Incubator, together with the partners of the Start Me Up business idea competition.
  2. To receive funding, you will need a written plan – approved by the Incubator – for the use of the money.
  3. Funding will be paid in arrears against the actual and approved costs.
  4. The beneficiary must provide the Incubator with a written report on the results of the piloting.
  5. The piloting and reporting must be completed by Monday 31 December 2018.

The organiser of the competition reserves the right to use all or only part of the funding reserved for piloting. Funding can be granted for one or more ‘pilotable’ ideas. Decisions made by Joensuu Science Park Ltd’s incubator and representatives, and partners of the Start Me Up business idea competition, are final and are not open to appeal.

The piloting will be implemented in cooperation with the Joensuu Regional Development Company JOSEK Ltd, Privanet Oy, FundedByMe Oy, the Circwaste project, Lieksan Kehitys LieKe Oy and Central Karelia Development Company KETI Oy.

11. OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Each competitor can submit several ideas for the competition.
  • The competition is open to both individuals and teams.
  • Judges and their family members cannot participate in the competition.
  • Company employees submitting ideas to the competition must declare that they comply with the Act on the Right in Employee Inventions.
  • The prize for office premises covers a maximum of 14m2.
  • Any materials submitted as appendices to the business ideas (prototypes/demos) will be returned, upon request, after the announcement of the results.
  • The winner of the “The best idea submitted by a student” award must be a student of the University of Eastern Finland, the Karelia University of Applied Sciences or Riveria.
  • One (1) one-minute video may be enclosed with the business idea in order to demonstrate it to the panel of judges. Contestants must complete the entry form in every case.
  • The video enclosed with the entry to the business idea competition may also be entered in the “Some Awards” category. Further instructions are available at www.startmeup.fi. PLEASE NOTE! The competing business ideas will be published on Wednesday 4 April 2018.
  • By submitting their ideas, participants accept the rules of the competition.
  • The decisions of the panel of judges are final and not open to appeal.
